What is the role of visual basic in asp.net

I have done couple of desktop applications using visual basic but people say that vb scripts are also used in dot net applications. How are they used and why are they used here? Do we create web pages using visual basic codes? I am totally new to asp.net, I need to know more about the utilization of visual basic in .net. Please help me here.
