What is SHA-1 (Secure Hash Algorithm-1) Function

I was thinking to protect password by encoding through MD5 hash but stumbled on SHA-1 (Secure Hash Algorithm-1). If you know what this encoding function does and how efficient is this to use for protecting secured information. Any help on this is highly appreciated.
