If you are using Ubuntu then search for TouchPad configuration tool called "QSynaptics" Then you need to add this option to /etc/X11/xorg.conf Section "InputDevice" Driver "synaptics" Identifier "TouchPad" Option "SendCoreEvents" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mouse0" Option "Protocol" "event" Option "SHMConfig" "on" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "on" EndSection No matter what distribution you are using, please see this link for more help on the subject. http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Synaptics_Touchpad And of course you can use the Ubuntu forums too :)

Oh I forgot to add "GSynaptics". That would be a better choice for the Gnome Desktop. QSynaptics is better used for KDE Also the Ubuntu forums has this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=510516&highlight=dell+1420&page=4 Sorry about that
